Volunteers clean Chacachacare Island & Quinam Beach

Over 1,000 pounds of waste was removed from Chacachacare Island and Quinam Beach during a beach clean-up exercise on June 1.

Two hundred employees of Massy Stores and Massy Distribution, participated in the clean-up exercise, which took place ahead of World Oceans Day 2019, on June 8.

The volunteers collected 265 lbs of plastic, 472 lbs of glass and 280 lbs of general waste at the Chacachacare clean-up.

Voluntary divers from the Trinidad and Tobago Eco-Divers Club and the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard also conducted an underwater clean up exercise in which a 600 lb waterlogged tractor tyre, and other types of non-degradable waste were removed from the ocean.

According to a media release members of the British High Commission and its Green Alliance Partners, as well as volunteers from the Caribbean Network for Rural Integrated Development/ International Coastal Clean Up also assisted in the efforts.

Forty volunteers from Massy Distribution simultaneously cleaned Quinam Beach clearing 256 lbs of plastic, 346 lbs of glass and 148 lbs of general waste.

Massy’s Retail Line of Business, Executive Chairman, Thomas Pantin said, “Through the introduction of the plastic bag charge at Massy Stores, 27 million single use bags were removed from circulation in Trinidad and Tobago over the past year. We wanted to go a step further by mobilizing our dedicated employees to physically remove other forms of plastic and waste in environmentally sensitive locations.”

He noted, “The detrimental pollution at Chacachacare has affected natural ecosystems and species such as the Hawksbill turtle whose nesting patterns have been negatively impacted by the pollution on the island. There is still so much to do, but by taking personal action such as refusing plastic bags and bringing reusable bags to the supermarket, or even participating in clean up exercises like this one, we can make a change.”

For communities and groups who coordinate clean ups across the country, Massy Stores also offers a free service to dispatch its #NoPlastic Trailer to collect plastic waste.
